Personal Statement
Journeys:
My name is Iman Billingsley and I am a senior at the Middle College High School in Johnston County. I was tasked with writing a personal statement about myself and I
found it quite difficult. When I am faced with a task, I like to compartmentalize it and complete one task at a time. Wow! That is an epiphany in itself. I regard life as a
journey and I would like to begin this statement at my beginning: my family.
My family is one of the most important people in my life. My mother especially has always been my rock. She has instilled morals in me that I will value and
stand by for the rest of my life. I admire my mother for her strength and ambition; she is goal orientated woman, who has taught me that any dreams or goals that are
set in front of me can be obtained with hard work and dedication. My father has always put me on the highest pedestal as his little “princess”. He would
always tell me that I only deserved the best in life and because of that I learned early on in life that in order to have the best you must be the best. I learned that
being humble, kind hearted, as well as educated, are the keys to a prosperous and successful future.
The second thing that has equipped me for this journey is education. Education to me is very important, and I plan on expanding my studies to a higher learning
institution. I am the future and without a proper education I cannot be an influential contributor as I am destined to be. School at times can be a struggle and a bit
stressful, but nothing is as rewarding as receiving a certificate or diploma saying “Class of 2013 Graduate” or “Principal‘s List”. As I progressed through school I faced
many challenges such as peer pressure, time management and procrastination, but with each year and every new grade I matured and become a bit wiser than I was
a year ago.
I’m still young so I am not very far along on this journey and my fellow pilgrims, whom I call my friends have influenced my life tremendously. My friends are like
my own personal cheerleading section. They uplift me when I feel low, they encourage me at times when I begin to doubt myself and they support me in my days of
weakness and despair. They are not afraid to be honest, and call me out on my mistakes; but most importantly they allow me to let down my guard and be myself.
If I could wish upon a star, this is what I see myself doing in five years: I would obtain my Bachelors degree on time from a four year university. Following my
graduation, I would begin my first year as a entry level RN (registered nurse) at a local hospital either in Washington D.C, California or New York City. In the hospital
I would be involved in prescribing medication dosages, routes, and frequencies based on patients' characteristics such as age and gender, interpret results of
diagnostic tests such as complete blood counts (CBCs), electrocardiograms (EKGs), radiographs (x-rays), analyze and interpret patient history. My life is on a fast pace
journery and I'm enjoying every bit of it.
