Dear Judges,
My project is a true reflection of my compassion for social justice. I chose “Bullying Awareness” for my senior project because I thought it would be the perfect contribution to the community. The nature of my project is to bring awareness about bullying, and its damage on today’s youth. Many students do not understand that their words can hurt, and can either tear down or uplift another. My “Bully Awareness” seminar was conducted at Cleveland Elementary, it incorporates, a lecture, a question and answer section, "Bullying Jeopardy" game, along with customized T shirts, anagram pencils and a certificate as a way to teach students about bullying formation, statistics, prevention tips and suggested advice for students who are in bullying situations.
While conducting this project not only was I able to teach others but I was also able to learn about myself. Throughout the completion of the project I learned the art of time management and its importance. In the past I procrastinated, but while doing this project I put myself on a schedule; each component of my paper had a specific deadline, which kept me from slacking off. I also learned how to conduct business phone calls. Throughout my project I had to make several phone calls to local elementary schools as well as T – shirt companies which required me to be professional, alert, and informative.
As I reflect back on the project, I’ve realized that the easiest part of the project were the research. When I researched my topic I looked online at a lot of different bullying articles, school wide bullying statistics, I read magazines geared towards bullying prevention in school and teacher involvement and I spoke to my guidance counselor. Another easy component of the project was the presentation at Cleveland Elementary; when I had to presented all I did was reiterate the knowledge I had already learned, however; I must admit when I first arrived at the elementary school, I was a little apprehensive, I didn’t think the students would enjoy the seminar, but once I walked in the class I was anxious and eager to present. The main challenge that I faced was budgeting my expenses for T- shirt designs and the other supplies. Also relying on other people was a big issue; a few suggested T- shirt companies fell through before I found the right one. Regardless of the challenges or past issues, I feel truly blessed to have been given an opportunity for presenting my senior project at Cleveland elementary school and I know that this project has opened the doors for me to visit other schools in the future.
